There were 10,783 British Citizens who had a main residence recorded in Austria for more than 90 days on 1st January 2024 . In
January 2024 there were 9,899 British Citzens in Austria with residency permits (Note: Diplomats and some other categories may not be included in the residency permit category.)

The chart on the left shows the growing trend for British Citizens to acquire Austrian Citizenship since 2016. In general Austria does not allow dual citizenship unless it is acquired from birth or under special circumstances such as Acquisition of Austrian Citizenship by declaration (§58c StbG). This means a large number of British Citizens have had to relinquish British Citizenship to gain Austrian Citizenship

The number of Austrians in the UK in 2020 varies from 35K (Statistik) to 12K (UK ONS). Some differences could be accounted for by the different ways dual nationals are counted. According to Official UK Home Office figures as at the end of December 2023 they have received 27,990 applications from Austrian Citizens to join the EU Settlement scheme
